03 | Looking Ahead: Winter in the Nordics

Hej,

When thinking about winter holidays, we often head straight towards sunshine.

But I've been looking at a different kind of escape.

Scandinavia offers some interesting experiences for couples who enjoy nature, architecture, wellness and spending time together away from busy cities.

Of course, the Northern Lights are part of the attraction, but I wouldn't build an entire journey around seeing them. They are a natural phenomenon, and sightings can never be guaranteed.

What interests me more is everything else these destinations offer.

Arctic Bath, Swedish Lapland

Located beside the Lule River, Arctic Bath is an unusual combination of contemporary architecture and traditional Nordic wellness.

Its floating structure becomes surrounded by ice during winter, creating a striking setting for its sauna and cold-water bathing rituals.

For couples who appreciate design, I'd look at the land cabins, with their large windows overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Days can be spent exploring the snowy countryside, meeting local reindeer herders or trying cross-country skiing.

Evenings are about returning to the warmth of the hotel.

I can imagine this working particularly well for an anniversary, a winter honeymoon or a special birthday.

A Nordic Escape Closer to Nature

Another property on my radar is Wood Hotel Bodø in Norway.

Built largely from timber, it sits above the Arctic Circle and combines Nordic design with views of the surrounding mountains.

Its rooftop wellness facilities are particularly appealing after a day outdoors.

For travellers who want to explore more of Norway, I would also consider combining a hotel stay with a coastal voyage, depending on the time available.

My advice: Plan a Nordic winter journey around the experiences you genuinely enjoy, with the Northern Lights as a possible bonus.
