02 | The Mediterranean: Is Autumn Becoming the New Summer?
Hello,
For years, September and October have been recommended as quieter alternatives to the European summer.
But travel patterns are changing.
Tour operators are extending their Mediterranean programmes, including flights to Crete later into November, reflecting growing interest in travelling beyond the traditional summer season.
For couples who aren't tied to school holidays, this opens up interesting possibilities.
Where would I consider travelling?
Crete: For a combination of culture, countryside, beautiful hotels and a slower pace.
Cyprus: For couples hoping to enjoy some late-season sunshine, particularly in October.
Mallorca: For a romantic break focused on gastronomy, villages, walking and boutique hotels rather than beach clubs.
Southern Turkey: For coastal resorts, historical sites and generally milder autumn conditions.
My advice for an autumn honeymoon
I wouldn't automatically recommend a Mediterranean resort in late October or November simply because the weather forecast looks promising.
Some restaurants, beach clubs and seasonal facilities may already be closed.
Outdoor pools aren't always heated, and boat excursions may operate less frequently.
For a honeymoon or anniversary, these details can make a real difference.
Instead, I would choose a hotel that feels inviting even when the weather isn't perfect, with good dining, wellness facilities and experiences beyond the beach.
The opportunity isn't necessarily a cheaper summer holiday. It's a different way to experience the Mediterranean.
