Not every romantic escape requires a long flight.

Living in London, I particularly appreciate how easily we can reach the English countryside for a few days away.

Autumn and winter bring a different atmosphere to country house hotels: long lunches, countryside walks, spa afternoons and evenings by the fire.

A few properties worth considering include:

Heckfield Place, Hampshire — For nature, thoughtful gastronomy and a slower pace.

Gravetye Manor, West Sussex — For couples who enjoy historic houses, gardens and food.

These are also interesting options for celebrations that bring generations together, although the right hotel will depend on the ages of the children and the kind of experience everyone wants.

For a short countryside escape, two or three nights is often enough to slow down without needing a complicated itinerary.
